Vehicle Description

1966 Dodge Charger – H-Code 426 Hemi, Numbers-Matching, TorqueFlite Auto, Black over Red Vinyl, Rust-Free Southwest Car

The introduction of the 426 Hemi for the street in 1966 changed the muscle car era forever. Originally developed for racing—where it proved a dominant adversary on oval tracks and drag strips alike—the 426 Hemi became an option on some mid-size Mopar B-body vehicles for 1966. Packing 425 horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque straight from the factory, it became a sensation on the street, too. This 1966 Dodge Charger Hemi is sold with the original 426 Hemi that was installed at Chrysler’s Lynch Road assembly plant in Detroit. The car is rust-free and was restored in 2011.

Powertrain

  • Original numbers-matching 426 Street Hemi V8 – installed at Chrysler’s Lynch Road assembly plant
  • Factory-rated 425 horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque with pair of four-barrel carburetors, 10.25:1 compression
  • Engine has never been rebuilt – only water pump reportedly changed
  • Starts and runs well – possible rear main seal leak
  • TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmission – shifts smoothly, no known leaks

Exterior & Body

  • Rust-free Southwest-based Charger – unitized body structure media blasted and repainted black around 2011
  • Paintwork in great shape – no significant blemishes
  • All exterior trim and chrome in very good condition
  • All glass reportedly original – few minor scratches on windows, no cracks or chips in windshield
  • Seals in good condition – all exterior lights work normally, including headlamp doors
  • Non-original equipment: 1967 front-fender turn signals, 1968 clearance lights

Interior & Comfort

  • Red vinyl interior – mix of reproduction and original components
  • Repro seat covers and carpet look like new – original door panels in great shape
  • Headliner looks great – all trim elements intact and in good condition, chrome parts re-plated
  • All gauges functional – no apparent cracks in steering wheel
  • Original AM radio retained

Chassis, Suspension & Brakes

  • Chassis, suspension, and brake elements in good condition – no known issues or needs
  • During restoration: springs cleaned and painted, along with other chassis and suspension components
  • Factory undercoating removed during restoration
  • Brakes perform great
  • Firestone Wide Oval redline tires installed in 2020 – mounted on stock 14-inch Magnum 500 wheels
  • Wheels in good condition – no reported curb rash

Rarity & Significance

  • H-code 426 Hemi – the legendary engine that changed the muscle car era forever
  • First year of the Dodge Charger (1966 inaugural model)
  • Numbers-matching, never-rebuilt 426 Hemi – only water pump changed
  • Rust-free Southwest car – restored in 2011
  • Factory-rated 425 horsepower – street Hemi sensation

This 1966 Dodge Charger H-Code 426 Hemi is a true piece of muscle car history – the inaugural year of both the Dodge Charger and the legendary 426 Street Hemi. This numbers-matching Hemi (installed new at Chrysler’s Lynch Road assembly plant) has never been rebuilt and runs well, paired with a smooth-shifting TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmission. The rust-free Southwest car was media blasted and repainted black during its 2011 restoration, with paintwork in great shape and all exterior trim and chrome in very good condition. The interior features a mix of reproduction and original components, including like-new repro seat covers and carpet, original door panels in great shape, a great-looking headliner, functional gauges, and the original AM radio. The chassis, suspension, and brakes are in good condition with no known issues – the brakes perform great. Firestone Wide Oval redline tires (installed 2020) are mounted on stock 14-inch Magnum 500 wheels with no curb rash. With 425 horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque from its pair of four-barrel carburetors, this restored, numbers-matching, rust-free 1966 Charger Hemi is a rare and thunderous example of the car that helped launch the Hemi legend on the street.
